Basic Mechanical Engineering Hydraulic Power Plant Practical Answer

Practical No.12: Demonstrate the working of the Hydraulic Power Plant

Practical Significance

The purpose of the hydroelectric power plant is to provide power from water flowing under pressure. It has two forms of energy, kinetic energy, and potential energy. Kinetic energy depends upon the mass velocity of flow while the potential energy exists as a result of the difference in water level below two points. The turbine converts the potential and kinetic energy possessed by water into mechanical energy. Thus the turbine is a prime mover which when coupled to a generator produces electricity.

Procedure

1. Identify and locate the components.
2. Locate the penstock, nozzle, and turbine different parts of the hydraulic power plant
3. Observe and trace the path of water

Observations and calculations

Component Function
Dam Creates a reservoir to store water. Raises water level for high potential energy.
Penstock Channels water from the reservoir to the turbine with minimal energy loss.
Nozzle  Converts pressure energy of water into high-velocity kinetic energy (jet).
Turbine Converts kinetic energy of flowing water (or jet from the nozzle) into mechanical energy to spin a shaft.
Control Gate Regulates water flow entering the penstock, controlling power output.

Results

We successfully observe different parts of the hydraulic power plant.
